Grey Restaurant, Hilton Cardiff

The Hilton Cardiff is always a fab place for a nice sophisticated meal or bottomless brunch (maybe less sophisticated depending on how much you drink). Afternoon tea at the Grey Restaurant is also the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Good views of Cardiff Castle and a good spot for spotting rugby players during the 6 Nations.

There is a good choice of tea available which is nice, as some venues recently have been lacking choice, but obviously I went for the English Breakfast. The cake stand was impressive, it had changed from the wooden box from previous visits.

The sandwiches were triple layered and were a mix of classic flavours on a mix of breads. Smoked salmon and cucumber, ham and mustard, Caerphilly cheese with tomato and egg mayo and chive. They were extra filling because of the extra layer of bread and filling.

The Scones were warm and were served with clotted cream and strawberry jam. Also a nice Welsh touch with a classic Welsh cake.

The sweet selection was good and varied. The raspberry cream slice and the blueberry muffin in the cutest espresso cup was particularly nice. I personally wasn’t a fan on the chocolate block as it was too rich for me.

The staff are always attentive and the atmosphere is always pleasant. I think large groups for hen parties and baby showers are in a separate section of the restaurant so they don’t get too rowdy for other diners.

Afternoon tea is £19 per person and you can add on various glasses of Prosecco and wines for £22-£26. They also have a specialty tea for £24 that includes a themed cocktail.

You can book online or by phone on 0292064640

It is the perfect venue for a celebratory tea as it feels a bit extra special, maybe because it’s a Hilton? Definitely worth a visit and look out for offers as there are occasionally deals on Travelzoo and various voucher deals.
